Individual Health & Dental Coverage
We are an employee benefits advisory with over 70 years of combined industry knowledge and experience encompassing both the insurer and advisory side of the industry.
Increasing automation, an aging demographic, and the movement, growth, and reorganization of businesses of all sizes and across most industries and sectors in Western Canada has meant there are more individuals leaving traditional employment arrangements. Individuals may be between jobs, retiring, semi-reitring, re-skilling, or joining a new company wihtout a benefit plan, but still have the need for Health and Dental coverage. The solution to these challenges is individual Health and Dental coverage.
There are a number of insurers that provide competitive pricing and coverage options for individual Health and Dental plans. At this point in time, we would rank them as follows: Manulife, Sun Life, Alberta Blue Cross and Canada Life/ GWL. Although all insurers have variations of similar coverage, we've distilled them down to 4 options which we've found work best for our clients, and are most comparable to the majority of the employee benefit plans we've helped put in place.
Individual health and dental coverage can be categorized into two main options: Non-gauranteed issue and guaranteed-issue. Non-gauaranteed issue individual health and dental plans require a short-form medical questionaire to be submitted with their application; indiviudals with underlying health conditions may not qualify for them. We've selected two of Manulife's FlexCare® non-gauranteed issue individual health and dental plans below.
Guaranteed issue plans do not require medical underwriting. Although there are some other more basic gauranteed issue options, the two Manulife FollowMe™ guaranteed issue plans we've selected below are the plans we think are the most comparable to many of the group plans we help put in place.
Guaranteed issue plans can be applid for within 90 days of leaving any group plan -- even if the individual was on a group plan in another country -- as long as they are a Canadian citizen and are covered by provincial healthcare.
Non-guaranteed issue plans usually provide a bit better coverage at a better monthly premium cost as a result of their short-form medical questionaire so we usually recommend applying for a FlexCare® plan first. However, Manulife has done a great job keeping the pricing and coverage gap small with their FollowMe™ gaurateed issue individual health and dental plans which are an excellent option for individuals whom have recently left a group plan or are in between jobs that don't qualify for a FlexCare® plan or retirees leaving a group plan.
Another reason we like Manulife's individual health and dental plans is the Manulife Vitality option which can be added to any of the below selected plans.
